Bus Expectations & Procedures
Please review the provided expectations and consequences for student conduct when using district-provided bus transportation. It draws upon the principles and disciplinary approaches outlined in the Livingston Public School handbooks.
Underlying Principles for Bus Conduct
- The school bus is considered a legal extension of the classroom. Therefore, students are expected to conduct themselves on the bus in a manner consistent with established standards for classroom behavior.
- Safety for all students, staff, and visitors is a priority, and bus conduct directly contributes to this.
- Students are expected to be responsible and respectful of themselves and others while on the bus.
- Video cameras are used to monitor students on school buses to help ensure safety.
General Bus Expectations and Rider Responsibilities:
These are foundational expectations for all students using bus transportation:
- Follow the directions of the bus driver.
- Sit quietly and listen to instructions.
- Follow directions immediately and without question when there is an emergency.
- Always be 5 minutes early for your bus.
- Wait quietly at least 10 feet from the edge of the road or street.
- Be respectful of the bus stop area; these areas are private property and should be kept litter-free.
- Board the bus and be seated quickly; delays cause others to wait.
- Remain in your seat while the bus is in motion.
- School rules apply on the bus as well as on school property.
- Consuming food and drink on the bus is at the discretion of the driver. Students need to ask before eating on the bus. Otherwise, keep food and drinks in closed containers inside backpacks or lunch boxes.
- Students will be required to pay for any damage to the bus.
- Protect other motorists and pedestrians by not throwing objects from the bus.
- Cell phones and other electronics (including smartwatches) are to be OFF AND AWAY AT ALL TIMES WHILE ON THE BUS.
- No student will be allowed off the bus at another stop unless prior arrangements have been made through the Transportation Department.
- No animals of any kind are allowed on the bus with the exception of documented service animals. (Service animals are permitted in school per provisions in policy).
- Large objects such as boxes, science projects, skateboards, scooters, rollerblades, antlers, skis, baseball bats, etc., need to find their own ride to school. It is the driver's discretion to allow or not allow any object on the bus.
- No weapons of any kind are allowed on the school buses. (See Policy #3311 for detailed definitions).
- Please keep your contact information updated on the school's Infinite Campus.
- All students in grades K-5 will have a backpack tag with their Bus Route Number on it. Be sure the tag is on their backpack. All buses have the Route Number clearly visible on a placard next to the door.
